What to know about GIA Certificates and Appraisals

If you’ve been researching diamonds and engagement rings, you’ve probably heard of GIA certificates. Here’s a quick overview of what they are and why they’re important along with some basic information on independent appraisals and the importance of insuring your engagement ring and fine jewelry.

What is a GIA Certificate?

A GIA certificate is a document verifying that your diamond has been assessed and graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA is a highly reputable diamond grading facility that determines the cut, color and clarity classifications of your diamond. Each GIA certificate has a unique number allowing your diamond to be traced throughout its journey.

Why is it important?

A GIA certificate is essential to ensure the diamond that you are purchasing has been graded and is authentic. It is an extra layer of reassurance for both you and the seller.

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is an independent assessment of your finished engagement ring or piece of jewelry. A third party will grade your piece and assign it a replacement value. We typically work with the International Gemological Institute (IGI) for appraisals.

Why do I need an appraisal?

An appraisal is essential for insuring your jewelry. While we hope something never happens to your ring, it’s always better to protect your investment and insure your ring as soon as you receive it. We recommend Jewelers Mutual. They make the process streamlined and simple.
