Platinum vs 14k White gold

We’re often asked what is the difference between platinum and 14k white gold. To help you understand the differences and guide you to choose the metal that is best for you, here is a breakdown of platinum and 14k white gold.

Similarities

Both platinum and 14k white gold look very similar in appearance. They both have the look of a shiny, silver metal and complement the look of diamonds making them stand out and sparkle brilliantly. Both platinum and 14k white gold are a great choice for engagement rings and fine jewelry settings.

Platinum

Platinum is a highly durable metal choice. It is a naturally white metal and does not tarnish or fade over time. Platinum will however develop a natural patina with time giving it a unique look. Platinum is one of the purest metals - usually 95% purity or higher. This ensures the metal won’t have discoloration or visible impurities. Platinum is a heavier and denser metal than white gold giving it extra strength to hold diamonds and gemstones in their settings. This is something to keep in mind if you happen to use your hands a lot or tend to be hard on rings and jewelry. Platinum is a bit more expensive than gold and requires more work for jewelers so that is reflected in the price of our engagement rings. Our platinum pieces are typically a few hundred dollars more than the same piece made in 14k white or yellow gold.

14k White Gold

14k white gold is also a great choice. The biggest difference between platinum and 14k white gold is the purity. 14k white gold is 58% pure vs 95% purity for platinum. The price of gold has historically continued to rise and is currently at an all time high making it a smart investment and the price is about the same as platinum. Something to note with white gold is that it is alloyed and can lose the original silver color over time and with wear. Your piece may need to be re-plated to maintain a like-new appearance over the years. Gold is a slightly softer metal than platinum but it is still durable and a secure mount for diamonds and gemstones. Our 14k gold is priced a few hundred dollars less than platinum engagement rings in the same style.

Making the choice

It is a personal choice that depends on your lifestyle and preferences. If you want a white metal that is naturally white and a more pure metal content, we would choose platinum but both platinum and 14k white gold are great metal choice options for engagement rings that will stand the test of time. Both are a great investment in a high quality piece of jewelry. If you are still uncertain about which metal to choose, please feel free to contact us and we can personally advise you and offer additional insight that might help you to decide between platinum and 14k white gold.
